Abstract

Microgrids as a tool for managing energy supplies, enabling greater sustainability, improved economics, and high reliability

Mining, metals, and other industrial plants around the world rely on energy as the prime resource to enable their operations.  Historically, hydrocarbon fuel sources were the only option for remote projects, while grid-connected projects counted on the reliability of large, centralised electricity generation;  the rise of renewables in the world has opened up options for the latter, but also changed the economics and reliability of centralised power supplies.  In this session, we explore the current trends, example projects, and opportunities in renewable power, energy storage, hybrid power systems, and microgrid controls for industrial users on and off the power grid.
